rest in peace lord dunsany you would’ve loved pathfinder

Where to even begin... the flat characters were awful enough in that there was no development, but they were entirely unlikable. Alveric was emotionally abusive and tried to forcefully convert his wife to his religion. Lirazel had absolutely no personality and was a grown women who spent eternity literally sitting on her father’s lap. Orion, their son, is a trophy hunter who cruelly hunts down unicorns only to behead them for his wall and leave the rest to rot.

The plot was vapid and unoriginal. It would have been alright if the characters and their relationships were even a little motivating. But since they all had toxic relationships with one another it made the motives of the characters seem entirely pointless. Why would I want Lirazel and Alveric to get back together after she flees in the first fifty pages because all he does it try and convert her and complain?

It’s a shame, besides some good moments of beautiful prose, the ending was particularly beautiful. It would have been so much more compelling and affective if the characters were actually likeable, at the least, and if the plot had been more strong. If we cared for Alveric and his journey then him reaching the end of it would be much more affective.

I've read a bunch of Dunsany's short stuff and really liked it but this is his first novel that I've read (I don't think he has too many novels). The style is not exactly Shakespeareian but it is definitely a type of vaulted prose that would turn many people off. It's filled with run-on sentences that sometimes lose the subject but still sound beautiful.

The plot was interesting and the characters memorable, I really enjoyed reading names like Ziroonderel and Lirazel aloud in my fantasy-accented voice.

Not much happened in the way of action to be found here. It does have fairy-talesque quality but the ending was not typical and in some ways a let down for me.

This book is a beautifully written tale. It is to be savored, not devoured in one gulp.

It's a rambling walk through nature, the passage of time, and the details that give life meaning. Flowery language in the best way possible.

Enchanting, succinct, and certainly the most delightful cautionary tale that I have ever read.
