If Tolkien is the father of fantasy, Dunsany is its grandfather, and it shows: The story is very much fairy-tale still, stretched to the length of a book. That is not always a good thing: the story feels stretched like plot scraped over too many pages. Still, the prose is beautiful and as a historical document it's fascinating.

Old school. Interesting, fun, obviously a precursor to a lot of modern fantasy, you can see how it inspired many modern others. As a story, it is a little slow and rambling, but still good.

It was interesting to visit this classic for the first time. It has a dreamlike, fairy-tale quality which is very atmospheric but also kept me from engaging with the characters on an emotional level.

This is a novel that mixes some genres, most notably those of poem and fairytale. There’s no denying that this makes for a beautiful written story, but this comes at the cost of an overly slow pacing and a drawn out plot.
