Beautiful and poetic, this is an older writing style. Somewhat difficult to get into, but a soft and delightful story.

A very influencial piece to the fanatsy genre, purer than Tolkien, and more poetic than George Macdonald. Beautifully written, and in these modern times of drawn out and cliché fanatsy novels, a breath of fresh air.

I absolutely love this book. It has magic, love, hubris, nemesis, loss and the search for those that were lost. It is at once heartbreaking and joyous. It's wonderful. I must say these things so my next views are not misunderstood. Sometimes the prose is nigh impenetrable. I occasionally found myself struggling to get through it. But, the meaning was always clear. It was like traveling to a beautiful island by swimming through oatmeal. But once you get there and towel off, you can appreciate the effort.

Many things are called "fairy tales for grown-ups", but usually fall more in the vein of classic stories with a twist, or expansion of the adult themes. This book feels more like the literal interpretation of that phrase. Rather than trying to outsmart or ironically comment on the conventions of folklore, it uses them to present a lush world and make "the fields we know" all the more magical from its inclusion of viewpoint characters who come from the fairy realm of Elfland. While it's a family friendly book, there is a sort of melancholy in its meditation on time and the re-enchantment of perception that a solo adult reader can enjoy.

Absolutely beautiful! As far as stories go, it was honestly fairly weak in terms of actual plot and character - it is, after all, mostly a fairy tale - but the magic was living, breathing, and the words danced as if alive.

NEW:
So much to love here. I don't think anyone has done nature-based fantasy better than Lord Dunsany

OLD:
I loved loved loved this one. Classic fairy tale nonsense that makes me so happy always. Lots of awesome passages to steal here

The ending delivered but the rest was just ugghhh
