I like this plot-heavy play a lot. It is way "over-hated." I just don't care for the ending. I'm glad it was happy for everyone, I just think the ending was too pat, and I was sorry I didn't get the gut punch of emotion I was expecting.

This play lacks depth of character and doesn't have a very strong plot line. It seems obvious that it was an opportunity to praise the current sovereign and try to smooth over some of the questions about her birth brought about because of the extreme marriage situation her father and biological mother were in.

I'm so glad to be finished with the Hnery's on my Bard-a-Thon! It feels like I have been reading them for months, even though it has actually only been a few weeks. Excited to move back into other plays in my reading.

Too political and yet, not political enough.

As is well known the structure of this play is a mess - this seems to be a common theme in Shakespeare's histories, events just come and go with little thought to overall structure. The actual story seems to basically end in Act 4 and the play just keeps going in 5... Villains get a sympathetic end and heroes ignominious ones - it's just a weird mix, but I think works in spite of it. The overarching theme of political machinations are just fun to watch unfold. Maybe not the best play, but one of the more entertaining histories at least.
