An interesting French comics album placing the famous photographs Abbas took of the Rumble in the Jungle match in context in a comics narrative. Jean-David Morvan ably constructs the story behind the photos, one which is beautifully drawn by Rafael Ortiz, with only a few storytelling hiccups (most notably at one crucial point in Don King’s backstory, where it’s not clear who fired a certain gun). The very end of the book ends on an odd exploitative note, but that aside, it’s an absorbing read with nice supplementary materials. I don’t care at all about boxing, really, but this drew me in and makes me want to go watch “When We Were Kings” to find out more about this pivotal match.

What a fantastic biography/look at a momentous event through its history and photojournalism.

Had a fantastic format incorporating historical photographs of the event with this graphic novel retelling of the story and of the photographer's view of the story.

Definitely recommend.
