I was looking forward to this book and had it on hold at my library since I saw the release date. I've been reading about these two dumb men for 51 books, and couldn't wait to see them again...but this one was a major disappointment.
The prose itself wasn't bad, and I appreciate the direct, colloquial thing Sandford has going on (and his characters have fun, natural way about them), but the plot was beyond lacking. Lucas and Virgil didn't seem like they wanted to be there, the usual high tension and stakes weren't present, and it ended VERY abruptly (I kept looking at how many pages I had left and was concerned). It wasn't the usual investigation and intrigue thing, it was all very superficial and trope-y.
I think my main complaint is that it didn't feel like Lucas or Virgil at all---it's like they were quippy side characters in their own novel (and Virgil kept complaining about being there in the first place, because he'd rather be writing...which is part of his character, but it killed the mood a lot). I also get it that Lucas is getting close to 60, but I read these dumb books for the Beat Up Assholes and Shoot Bad Guys thing he has going on, and he felt way more Boomer than Badass. Very big let down.
I'll still read the next one when it comes out, because I'm a masochist---but I hope the next one is better.
