Meeeeeeeeh
A bit disappointed.

It's a lot more cosy mystery, rather than a thriller, with an underlying gothic atmosphere.
Pas du tout mon mood du moment, donc un flop pour moi.

Aucun attachement pour les personnages, un rythme trop lent et saccadé..
Je saisPas trop, j'ai pas adhéré, mais ce n'est pas un mauvais livre.
🤷‍♀️

I was super disappointed with this. It's definitely marketed as a mystery, but it fell flat. I'm guessing it was supposed to be a "who done it" but the set up was terrible (definitely knew who was going to die and how the minute the character is introduced into the scene) and the actual murderer had minimal motive. This was mainly a story about a wealthy dysfunctional family and how they deal (or rather don't deal) with hardship. I was extremely bored reading this, the only reason why this is getting 2 ⭐ is because of the creepy forest vibes.

Love Eve Chase books, the prose is always gorgeous and evocative. This one is my favourite so far, and I found it more emotional than the others. I wish it hadn't been wrapped up quite so neatly though, just a few too many coincidences.
For instance if Marge had orchestrated the finding of the baby with Walter, why didn't she tell him about Don being there? And why would she have killed Don, maybe if she'd had an investment in seeing the baby safe, like it was her grandchild or a relation that would have made sense. Also, there is no explanation as to how Sylvie was adopted. How did Rita find her, wouldn't  the baby probably have been adopted by someone else by that point? Would social services really have given Sylvie to someone who had been involved in the murder case??
