I tend to re-read this every so often. I feel like I reference this book a lot, and not many people understand it? It’s a good short story if you’re looking for a classic that is pretty to read (if you understand the context, of course).

An important work of feminist literature...

An eerie and unsettling account of a woman's post-partum psychosis during the late 1800's. Gilman did a great service by chronicling the psychiatric practices of the time that spiraled a woman deeper into madness.
At face value this a disturbing Gothic story, but more importantly it touches on the misogyny that permeated the author's time period.
This is a story that will be unaffected by time. Despite being written in the 1890's, it will still hit close to home for any new mother. Reading this 2 weeks post-partum, I can't help but reflect and feel thankful for the advances we have made in feminism and modern psychiatry.

a quick and easy read. despite it being short, it was so interesting to read. i love everything about it - the writing style, description, the pace and the plot. i recommend this short story to anyone into feminist literature
