I can see how reading either Priory of the Orange Tree or A Day of Fallen Night first will change reading experiences as Priory basically lays out what would happen in ADOFN.

In a sense, it does ruin the surprise of figuring out certain details as you have the foresight and knowledge of what will happen, but alternatively you feel almost Cassandra-esque where you know the future but are helpless to stop it and can only watch it play out. It lends itself a certain tragedy to the experience and it doesn't make it hurt any less.

It was interesting how much more Samantha Shannon has expanded the world and I enjoyed seeing the world in the past whilst reading this book, especially as you watch history play out.

The characters felt a lot more fleshed out this time round and there are a wealth of relationships explored that make very interesting dynamics.
You can't help but be proud of Glorian and all she achieves. And that extends to Siyu's achievements as well and her character development is spot on.

It was also great to have a variety of age in the narrators as it gave different perspectives that were otherwise not as pronounced in Priory.

Overall, very enjoyable and I can't wait for Among the Burning Flowers.

I read this book in 3 days and I don't know how I'm going to recover from it.

While I absolutely loved The Priory of the Orange Tree, I think this book is my favourite of the two. I had high expectations and this book surpassed all of them. This book is huge, but it has short-ish chapters that helped me fly through reading this.

ADOFN is set 500 years before the events of Priory, and we are introduced to a fresh cast of characters, in some familiar settings. Despite having read Priory and knowing some of the events that happens, I still found myself holding my breath at moments because the stakes were HIGH in this book. Our characters faced danger and it was like the author dialled the tension all the way up to 100.

This book has 4 POV characters and I love every one of them. I won't say too much because of spoilers, but I was impressed with how the autor wove them together. It was beautiful and I already feel sad at having to leave this book and the characters behind.

Like Priory, this book continues to explore motherhood, religion, different countries and political systems, society norms, languages, and so so much more. This world is expansive, it's beautifully rich, and I absolutely love it, and this book.

“In the tales, she has no name, like too many women in stories of old.”

It took me a while to finish this book, because I had a hard time really getting into the story. However, I'm still rating it 5 stars, because it is so incredibly well-written. The world building is unbelievably good and by the end of the book it felt like I personally knew the characters. And of course, I will always love a book which tells the story of amazing women.
I can't wait for the Roots of Chaos #2.

Ich bin immer wieder beeindruckt, wie Autor*innen so absolut krasse und komplexe Welten erschaffen können. Genial.

I’m so in love with the way Samantha Shannon builds her fantasy world and how multifaceted each and every character and conflict is. With me loving ‘Priory’ previously, “A Day of Fallen Night” has cemented the author for me as a must read whenever she releases more of her work.
