A Day of Fallen Night was excellent. It was much more enjoyable than Priory of the Orange Tree because I already had a grasp on the deep, deep lore of the Roots of Chaos universe and didn’t have to work quite as hard to remember the geography or religious history. So enjoyable, in fact, that I finished it in two days, which is really impressive on Samantha Shannon’s part because it’s over 850 pages. Each of the four heroes, Dumai, Tunuva, Wulf and Glorian, are wonderful and so different. The thematic thread through all their stories, and the book broadly, was lineage, legacy, and the terrible burden we place on women to act as wombs without a will of their own. Some of the women in this story escape this burden, and some don’t, but it follows and haunts all of them, and is key to the progression of the story and their lives. But besides the delicious themes and gorgeous language, The Day of Fallen Night is just delightfully fun. The chapters are short, the pacing is perfect, and the length… is exactly what I wanted.

Wow wow wow!!! Samatha Shannon just keeps hitting it out of the park! Definitely recommend reading this one after the priory, even though it’s a prequel.
I fell in LOVE with Glorians strength and Tunuvas big heart. Dumai and Nikeya’s story had me almost in tears by the epilogue, and Wulf’s journey of self discovery was just so interesting to follow.

Seeing how the actions made in this book lead to the next is so interesting and satisfying, and I’m so ready for the next installment of this series. September can’t come fast enough!

That was a great fantasy. At first, it was a hard read because there's not much going on. But as the chapter passed by, it became much more immersive, the way I had been on the first book.
