I don’t know if I was in the right mindset for this book. I loved most of the storylines, but this book dragged on for me. It was interesting to see more of the world Shannon built before the events of POTOT.

DID NOT FINISH: 5%

Was listening to the audiobook and could not stand the narrator for Unora. The pacing and her voice/accent were not doing it for me. I ended up looking for reviews and seeing a lot of people saying they dnf’d it. Lost interest in committing to slogging through it after that.

I loved this book but not as much as the first one, felt like there was still some pacing issues in this one too. Think I'd sell my soul for Tunuva and Esbar though!

This one took a while, not because it's a difficult read per se but its not an 'easy read', I found it does require full attention or it's quite easy to miss bits/get lost and so only read it at certain times.

Having said that...

The characters are so well developed. Like the first one, I felt like I really knew all the main characters, they are so well developed throughout the story. The relationships between characters are carefully built, they feel authentic and whole. Character development is assimilated into the plot effectively. Again with one, the glossary and character list definitely helps with the side characters as there are just too many people/similar names to remember (as is with a monarchy).

Shannon structures multiple perspectives within each chapter, it feels effortless. It was never difficult to ascertain the POV and never felt staggered.

The plot is complex and detailed, and as long as you're paying attention, it is such a well developed and fascinating world. Gives an excellent insight and context to the Priory of the Orange tree. The writing is rich and evocative, it is inclusive but subtly so that it feels natural and integrated. The battle scenes are again epic but didn't feel quite as exciting as in priory of orange tree.
