First off, Chris Kyle, thank you for your service. I know with 100% certainty I could not do that job. I couldn’t be in the military; I’m not cut out for that work; and I’m grateful for our military and special forces. I’m also glad for another example of the movie being better than the book. The “aww shucks” good guy vibe of a sniper feels disingenuous at best. The sweeping generalizations of Muslims is alarming. The rampant hazing is disturbing. And the seeming lack of knowledge of PTSD is outright shocking. Also, it’s strange that Kyle’s wife doesn’t receive writing credits for this book when several chapters are written from her voice.

I wanted to like this book but just couldn't. I'm not one who just stops reading books. I'll even finish bad books on principal. However, this one...ugh. I stopped about half way through. I'm shocked I even made it that far.

First off, I'm a huge military supporter but I'm also well aware there are some awful people in the military. Chris Kyle seems to have been one of them.

I do not for the life of me understand why people think this guy is so great. Don't get me wrong, I am beyond grateful for... whatever real things he had done. Another reason I stopped reading is that I've been reading all over that a lot of his stories are fabrications. That upset me to the point that I couldn't continue.

Another reason I couldn't continue is his incredible arrogance with SUPER questionable morals. I mean, I feel like this guy was somewhat of a sociopath. Truly. How his wife put up with it is beyond me because he wasn't even a good husband or father. There was no empathy, no compassion for other life, all he seemed to care about was how awesome he was and killing people.

On top of that, the writing was awful. I get it, he was a military guy not a writer. He hired people to help and they clearly didn't. And it's dumb he didn't credit his wife who put her two cents in all over the book. That's just my opinion. But bad writing is also tough to get through.

Helped me see a first hand experience of the war in the middle east through the eyes of a patriotic solider. Very personable tone.

There are nearly 6,000 reviews of this book, so I'm not going into a detailed summary. I'll just say it was hard to assign it a rating, because three stars is "liked it" and I did not like it at all. But I'm glad I read it. Parts of it are fascinating, and I learned quite a bit about the mind of a sniper. I'm not a pacifist, and I understand that sometimes violence must be met with violence. But the gleeful enthusiasm that the snipers had about collecting kills turned my stomach. I know Kyle would argue with me (if he were still alive), but I doubt he'd change my mind, just as I'm sure I wouldn't change his. Facing up to the grim reality of war is one thing, but being excited to get back "into the action" so he can start killing again is something else entirely. As far as I'm concerned, the real hero here is his wife. Worth reading, but it's not an easy read--not the least because it's not very well written.

I really enjoyed this book. A glimpse into what SEALs do is very interesting. I just found that at times (even though I was not reading the same sentence over and over and I was in fact at least a page away from the first same sentence), that the book was repetitive in the words, not the idea.

I found it interesting to read about the effects that war and battle and losing a fellow brother can have on a person. The more interesting part was how Kyle choose to alleviate the stress and pressure.
