Parsipur's Touba and the Meaning of Night has set a high bar for every other book I will read this year. The story spans a century, placing fantastically complex characters against a backdrop of major political and social change in Iran. Despite the strong role of historical events in the progression of the novel, those unfamiliar with or uninterested in the history will still be pulled in by the magical realism interwoven in the lives of Touba and her family. A wonderfully compelling read.

The afterword by Houra Yavari details the political landscape for those interested, as well as the literary history that led up to Parsipur's writing. Yavari does a great job of placing Touba's story in context to gain a deeper appreciation for the work.
