The structuring felt a bit formless to me which I think was my main issue with the book, plus there was a huge cast of characters which was difficult to keep track of. Speech has that special noir flavour which is fun but almost incomprehensible a lot of the time, so I think you just have to let it float over you. Picked up pace towards the end of the book, still an enjoyable classic thriller but I think the film version is better.

I love this book! It’s very much a relic of its time and I disagree with it’s politics, but it’s just a damn good story!

Man, what a book. So clearly influential, even across genre and medium. the wit, the casual poetry of Marlowe's inner monologue, the tiny, vivid details that grant complete immersion, and the momentum, not just of the plot, but of the language itself, all of it masterful. It feels like Chandler is both showing off and hardly breaking a sweat at the same time.
"You're as cold-blooded a beast as I ever met, Marlowe."
Basically good; solid plot and interesting characters but since it was written in 1939 some of the slang went totally over my head to the detriment of plot development.

My first venture into the noir detective fiction. Enjoyable. I was expecting a lot more, but this is still the first book, so I believe the other ones will be even better.
