Finished this last night. It was funny and well plotted for such a short story. Tone and setting with aliens and ploitical intrigue and warfare reminded me of the later Innkeeper novels. The mature bits were entertaining. But, to be honest, this is not a memorable story. Just one day later I struggle to remember the ending…

Review from 2015:

How could I have missed this freebie on Ilona Andrews' homepage?

"Things of a sexual nature...", oh my, lol.... That was pretty funny. And a lot of excellent world-building for such a short snippet. Can I have that as a novel, please? With smut?

I'm not rating this novella because it would be unfair. I wanted to give it 1 star (was reading it as a part of the kinsmen universe) then I read the description now. Since this was written because of a dare, I can't blame them for the quickness but I felt like I skipped a few pages, something was off
the sudden love
. Honestly, this story would've made a good book if developed right.

I liked this quick little read. I think it's great that Ilona Andrews does things like this for the fans. It's a quick read and really there's a lot of focus on different cultures and the things that people will do to stay alive / thrive. I will admit some of the more intricate details dealing with the history of the different cultures confused me at times, but that shouldn't deter anyone from reading this.

Note:

Notice about this short story came up in my GR feed. I got it, read it and shrugged. It's a cute story but not that funny and rough around the edges.

What a fun, smutty short story!

Being a huge fan of the Kate Daniels series I was interested in reading this short story. I knew that it would be nothing like the Kate Daniels books but I still enjoyed it. I like science fiction but don’t really read much of it so this was a good story to find.
The story was not really what I had expected to be honest. There is a bit of adult content that surprised me somewhat, I knew that there would be some form of adult content because you are warned before downloading the book but I was surprised that it wasn’t actually sex scenes as such.
That being said, I thought the story was quite interesting. You don’t really get told too much about the world or anything like that so it’s got this mysterious element to it which was quite cool.
Overall, I thought that A Mere Formality was an interesting short story and I had fun reading it.

Unlike the previous two in the Kinsmen Universe, this may be the shortest and least I like but STILL A FOUR STARS!

Oh and, I'm glad the Andrews could branch out to sci-fi too. I need more stories from them.

p.s. I'm waiting on knees for Sapphire Flames right now and these short stories saved my life from Ilona Andrews' thirst.

I found this story entertaining and well-written, I especially loved the sci-fi aspect of it. I found the character of Deirdre likable and a good choice as the focus of the story. The "mature" nature the story took surprised me, but it added some humor to the mix. I would have rated the story higher but there were a few info-dumps that I did not feel added much to the story and caused it to drag a bit. I also felt the story needed to be a bit more fleshed out for the ending to be more realistic. But overall I did enjoy it. I think Andrews would do a sci-fi space epic pretty well if the duo chose to do a full-length book.
