Every now and then I encounter SFF that’s written with a very particular kind of humanism that combines moments of soul piercing examination of existence with gently sarcastic use of pop culture in a way that leaves me feeling uplifted and hopeful, but still thoroughly entertained. Iain Banks excelled at it, as did Terry Pratchett. It’s hard to write socially conscious SFF that isn’t unrelentingly dark, let alone something that incorporates Buddhist thinking in such a tender way.

I’ve enjoyed Max Gladstone’s previous series immensely, but was in no way prepared for the delight I found in this book. It has one of the best death scenes I’ve ever read, one that had me stunned by how profound and touching it was. I can’t wait to read this again.

Edit: I've read it four times and it's more comforting every time.

Holy fucking goddamn is this book everything I've ever wanted in a space opera. If I could somehow have a John Williams overture blasted into my brain as I was reading it would be like all my childhood wishes came true.

And look, let's not beat around the bush (haha) - this is a fast-paced, wildly imaginative adventure that has a lesbian lead. Unapologetically, brashly so. She fucks women, loves women, protects women. It's a background reality for the entirety of the book.

It's not mentioned by publicists pre-release and then hastily tossed off in a few lines in the actual text for progressive points. It's not a source of trauma or conflict. She just is, and let's get the fuck on with the adventure.

And what an adventure! We're taken from world to asteroid to planetoid to moon palace to jungle simulation, having Dragon Ball Z fights and steamy fucks and mind-bending revelations along the way.

Finally - FINALLY - my library got this back in their Hoopla catalog and I could finish listening to it.

I started this I think in August of 2019 and then it disappeared - poof!- from the Hoopla catalog. Every month since I've been checking for it to re-appear, and it finally did!

The second half is just as entertaining as the first, but boy howdy is this a looooong book!

It's also a bit odd, but I would expect nothing different from the author of The Craft Sequence.

I enjoyed it, but it's definitely not for everyone.

(I also
Spoiler wanted Viv and Zanj to end up together, but I love a good Enemies to Lovers story.
)

Batiburrillo aburrido y decepcionante con algunas ideas buenas.
