3.81 AVERAGE

A space opera revolving around a band of future space misfits as they meet, grow to like each other despite their differences, and fight a God-level common enemy.

At times it gets long and heavy in the sci-fi but the relationship between the characters grounds the story.

2 for story; 4 for narration so a 3 average

The book started off interesting. Viv is a genius programmer who has made and lost fortune after fortune. Knowing that her latest tech is going to bring the authorities down on her, she attempts to go into hiding. But as she is about to, she is suddenly whisked off to another time and place, thousands of years in the future.

From there it gets just pain weird and hard to follow. I had hopes and with the first couple chapters I recommended it to people. But now.... not so sure.

So creative, such detailed worldbuilding on a galactic scale... It was all too much for me right now, but I will be back!

I only read the first 40 pages or so, so marking this "finished" but take that with a grain of salt. I liked the concept here (a powerful woman on earth is about to turn on an AI program that would give her huge leverage over world governments, and is whisked away by an alien power who sees her as a future threat,) but the writing was something I couldn't figure out how to enjoy.

Even the main protagonist felt a bit weird, just poorly drawn and oddly put together. Once the story got to a place where that main character was making jokes about agile & standup while fighting robots in space I decided to put the book down and try another one and it obviously was not for me.

I didn't hate it. I didn't love it. It's aptly titled because it felt like it took me FOREVER to finish it. Way too much packed in that it just started to drag unnecessarily after a while. Also disappointed in the romantic plot line - it felt very typical of "hero in far away land hooks up with the pretty barbarian princess" (and it felt like a straight man wrote it...which is the truth).

DID NOT FINISH: 11%

Just could not get into this one.

4.5/5 - One of the most enjoyable books I’ve read in a little while, as it definitely checks all the boxes for me. The setting (and overall tech level of the universe) reminds me a bit of A Fire Upon the Deep.

Another space opera with a sapphic lead.

Not a normal 5 star for me. It was a long and difficult read and some concepts I could not really grasp. But the character development was perfect, it was like a slow burn character/party growth for complicated characters.
