The pettiness of the characters got too frustrating, especially contrasted by the righteousness of Nahri and Ali. There didn’t seem to be any redemption that would be believable. It stopped being fun and interesting

4.25 stars. As a second book in a trilogy this was is strong. The characters are older, more mature, and more secure in who they are and what they believe which makes for a more engaging story. However, I heard there was a romance in this story but so far I’ve not seen it. They’re all too busy fighting for their lives to worry about romance - which, I guess, makes this story more realistic.
