I know it’s not for everyone but I loved it! You’ll know if you read it, but when I got to THAT part of the book I literally gasped. I love a book that makes me have to put it down to comprehend what’s happening.

The concept of a crippling weed addiction is worth subtracting an extra stronh
It’s fine (not derogatory). I wasn’t too engaged in anything happening or the characters. Had some qualms about potrayals and the red herrings but mainly kept reading because it’s an easy book to read. Still adequate read though.

UGH. I’m torn between 2 and 3 stars for this book because I liked the build up before the twist, and the twist itself, but not the two paired together. Together, IMHO, it made no f-ing sense!!! Why build it up like a detective mystery when it turns out the detective had absolutely no reason for detecting? Because he is the only one who actually knew what happened already?
The author made it seem like he was falling in love with her and she was manipulating him somehow, and then it turns out she’s (almost) completely innocent and was not manipulating him at all (except for one instance, but that was out of self-preservation and not a psychotic need to manipulate.) She was just a terrified woman with a tragic life and the “protagonist” had an insatiable need to make her life even more desperate and confusing.
It was posed as if he cared about her in a psychotic stalker who ends up killing the victim he is obsessed with kind of way, which is fine and makes sense, but the problem is that there was absolutely no tangible reason/explanation why he ended up that way. I don’t see how an abusive father alone would create that kind of psychology in a person. And the fact of him being a psychologist makes it even more unbelievable.
I don’t know. I’m just so confused. The pieces don’t fit together in my brain. I kind of hated it. But I did love the premise and with a different ending I think it would have been great. Or same ending, different lead up.
Ugh. My brain hurts.

I really enjoyed this book. It would be 5 star if not for one thing- the ignorant comments about borderline personality disorder. I was deeply offended when one of the characters (a psychiatrist) basically said “don’t bother trying to help or treat her, she’s borderline. She can’t be helped, it’s a waste of time.” The other doctor he was speaking with didn’t correct his assertion but only denied the patient was borderline at all. To me this leaves a false, ignorant idea about borderlines for the general public. As someone who has been in recovery and had no symptoms of borderline for years with intensive therapy, this hurt me. There are enough misconceptions out there about us already.
Greek tragedy here that I thought was a slow approach to its take off. The anti heroine was brought to life by the author by her gestures of dealing with life and not by her voice. Actually her voice was found in therapy sessions. This is not your typical whodunit story yet it’s complex nature layers on like a good cake.
Actually quite an enthralling read for almost 2/3rds. Aside from a few quirks and repetitiveness that should have been edited away, this is a decent first book. I am disappointed with the gushing big name blurbs though - I don't think this book on par with those I've read by them, so that's rather disingenuous. I did consider the authorial storytelling choice of interest, it is not one employed, or at least read, often by myself. I thought our protagonists mostly written with a deft hand, and the denouement in this instance surpasses the climax, which is oddly rather stumble-rushed through in a dissatisfying manner, my largest complaint. After all the strategic work to guide us toward his goal, the author suddenly bum-rushes us between the uprights and blows the ending whistle, leaving us cheering the score whilst shaking our heads wondering how we got here. Overall a decent storytelling, just not quite worth heavily recommending.
