My kids loved this book, even my 4 year old. They were gripped by the story and characters from the very beginning, and I appreciated the unusual perspective.
Ethan Hawke does an amazing job of telling this quirky story about the dog Johannes who is "the eyes" of the park and who runs so so fast. The conflict was minor to me, and shifted a little. The best part of this book is the narration and the character building. Outrageously wonderful vocabulary and descriptions. A little slow at times.
I’m not drawn to books about animals, but I’m so happy I read this one! Highly recommend listening to the audiobook. Ethan Hawke was phenomenal. I was laughing out loud.
Wow wow wow. I knew this book would be great but could have never predicted just how much I enjoyed it. The writing is beautiful and the story is encapsulating. I’d highly recommend this book and I’ll definitely come back to listen to the audiobook sometime soon. I absolutely love Johannes!

From refreshing myself, I think there were times that Johannes was a little annoying to me. He was very boastful. I know the author was trying to give us a picture of how he was as a dog, but it made me like the book less.
It was interesting finding out that he was on an island. It also probably was dauting to them when the museum was being built. Johannes's infatuation with the rectangles definitely was part of his downfall. Rescuing the girl made him too popular. It was interesting that they were looking for a coyote and Johannes didn't know he was part coyote.
I did like that everyone had jobs. I liked that he was the eyes. I liked that his friend Bertrand saved him. I liked that the Bison were kind of wise leaders. I even liked the goats and thought it was funny when they went from ignoring him to worshipping him. Helene might have been my favorite character with her kindness to Johannes with both moving the Bison off the island and then helping him and Bertrand get off.
I was annoyed that he didn't ask the Bison if they wanted to get off. I don't love it when people/characters presume to know what is best for other characters.
Bertrand's death wish was crazy to me. Maybe that is typical gull behavior.
I did like the story but the few annoying things took the rating down for me.
I wanted to like this book so much, but alas it was not to be (*sigh*). I was bored while reading it and so it felt like a slog to get through. I still give it 3 stars though purely because the subject matter is animals
