Johannes was a "free dog" —the eyes (and ears) of the island. He reports what is going on to three bison - the "Keepers of the Equilibrium." Johannes is aided in his duties by several other animals.
This book just fell flat for me - no story arc or meaningful plot. Felt more like a daily diary. What the animals did was beyond my suspension of disbelief. The "lanuguage" they use was often confusing - i.e. sometime numbers were given in animal time and sometimes in human time.
