didn't live up to the acclaim. Would've been great if kate dicamillo wrote it. I tried hard to love it as a fantasy-foundfamily-animal fiction crazy person, but it just felt so contrived in many spots. the weird poetry thing was not working as much as I enjoyed the characters themselves.

I know there are a lot of “first-person POV of dog” books out there, but this is on another level. Dave Eggers just makes language fun, and this is no exception. The characters are so lovable, the setting is distinct, and Johannes is an all-time favorite protagonist for me — he is lovable in a dog way, but still flawed and three-dimensional and endearingly arrogant, a Peter Pan-ish “oh the cleverness of me” type of character. The story branches off in a few different directions, takes some detours, and doesn’t settle on its most solid version of a plot until towards the end, but that results in a character-centric book that I’m certainly not complaining about. Lovely for all ages - as an adult, for a mid-level reader, and to read aloud to younger kids. I cried so much, and (small but benevolent spoiler here) not for the reasons you worry you’ll cry when reading a book with a dog on the cover.
Masterpiece. This book should absolutely be considered classic literature. I’m at that loss of words that happens at the end of the best books…when all that can be done is soak up the ending, the possibility, and the transition of the reader back into “real life”—now made just a little bit better by spending time in another world for a while.

A delightful read that reminded me a bit of the animated movie Flow. More books and movies with a dog or cat as the main character, please.
