sure it has its flaws and yes absolutely murakami has never felt the warmth of a woman in his life (and this is something you just have to accept) but when i finished this book my heart was beating quite loudly because of how much love i felt for aomame and tengo so . pretty excellent if you ask me

I'm torn about this one. The writing was excellent and for the first book actually managed to captivate me. But there was too much "wrong" with the book after those first few pages to make it an enjoyable experience: the pace is excruciatingly slow, I couldn't care less about whole paragraphs of text in which the main characters are recalling their childhood or reading short stories, the story became increasingly absurd, etc. There is no real resolution to the story either, we have no idea what happens to several characters. They just up and disappeared.

All in all a disappointing read that left me longing for a story.

omg get fucked i actually read it. will write a full review later
  • book 1 = a much slower character study and can see that people might stop reading at this point since the plot meanders for while. however, since i enjoy character driven stories i didn't mind.
  • book 2 = plot picks up but not as fast as i expected. start to uncover the background but still was left unsure of where the plot would go because it was still a little bit stagnent.
  • book 3 = plot picks up again but it didn't feel rushed and was actually still quite slow and i was approaching the end and was still like so what is gonna happen. it did feel a little repetitive between the perspectives though.
  • ending = i have so many questions but im not mad about it ?? i would have gladly read another couple hundred pages just to answer the questions. however, i still felt satisfied which is quite weird.
overall, i enjoy murakami's writing style and the what the fuckery that he brings is here (aND MORE)

the most unrealistic part of this book wasn’t the two moons in the sky, or the
weird cult that makes doppelgängers of young girls,
or the parallel universe thing. it was that
aomame is supposedly heterosexual

Lovely book, but incredibly difficult to finish if you can’t tolerate a slow pace. The best way to describe this book is “interesting” but there are very few spots that I would describe as especially heart-pounding or heart-wrenching. It’s like crazy things will happen in the story but it’s viewed through a lens of calculation or meditation. It’s almost more fun to hear a synopsis of this book than to actually experience all 1000 pages just because of all the weird things that happen in it.
Weird book. Worth reading! But I don’t think I’ll be reading it again.

This book, although one of Murakami’s most famous, is definitely not up there as one of his best for me. The ending is HIGHLY unresolved, and not in Murakami’s typical “up to interpretation” type ending. It is truly unresolved.
