Too slow, it dragged with not enough Louis & Angle, maybe some muscle from the Fulci Bros.

The problem I've been having with this series since The Book of Bones is that it's spent so long building to something huge, but then for three/four novels it's just felt like it's stalling for time. Maybe Connolly doesn't really know where to go, or doesn't want the journey to come to its conclusion. This novel at least does start the ball rolling again at least, and all of the chapters involving Jennifer and Sam were absolutely fantastic and thoroughly enticing. Any adventure with Charlie Parker is a fun and gritty modern noir ride, sprinkled with dark humour amongst deliciously grim and dirty undercurrent. The pacing is a bit uneven, and the perspectives are a bit all over the place, but that doesn't really seem to impact its effect that much. The real problem with this really is that the central story was quite run-of-the-mill,  though everything around it is definitely very intriguing. That's what's so jarring: the fat tastes better than the meat. Still it's been enough to rekindle my enthusiasm for the series, which had been waning, I admit. If anything, the ending has left me very excited for what comes next. I just hope that what comes next delivers on the promise the last twenty or so books have been offering. The 'big thing' has got to at least start to happen, and this novel just about gives me hope that it might.
