Excellent mix of adventure and horror, though take into consideration the tone of the time it was written in- fantasy, romance, adventure, and imperialism at its best.

I enjoyed this book so much more than I expected to. The story is dynamic and engaging. There's also quite a few funny points!

Quite misogynisistc and xenophobic by today's standards but, as has been pointed out, it really needs to be read in the context of the time in which it was written.

I’d seen the film of this (with Ursula Andress) many years ago and wondered what the book would be like. I’ve also come across H R Haggard’s characters in other works (League of Extraordinary Gentlemen).

Sorry to say that the book didn’t fulfil my expectations. The basic plot was good, but there were too many monologues that didn’t come really add much to the tale.

The climax of the story was over in a couple of pages; not a good pay-off for the effort put in getting to that part!

The character of She (Ayesha) was well considered, her longevity giving her a different frame of reference, attitude and moral values to others not so fortunate to live so long.

It’ll be a while before I read another HRH book...unless someone can convince me that the story isn’t as padded and the quality of the writing is better.

an interesting novel. although the writing style was good and easy to read, about halfway through the plot seems to drag and becomes a lot less interesting. at least to me, anyway.

Very exciting adventure tale in Africa. By the writer of the Allan Quartermain books. Couldn't put it down though it was a bit slow at times...Very descriptive.

It was...alright. It's definitely a product of the time of colonialism. Some parts were really drawn out that didn't need to be. But it is what it is.

I wrote a long review which didn't get saved. Basically, the moral of the story is that it doesn't matter what kind of horrible monster you are, so long as you are really damn good looking. The ending relied on chance rather than any action by any of the characters. I was quite disappointed, as I loved "King Solomon's Mines".
