This book is a survey of women who have contributed to the horror genre over the past few centuries. It took a little time for it to capture my interest, but soon, I was hooked. The authors delve into the lives and work of multiple authors, some of whom I'd heard of before and some of whom were new to me. I read far more science fiction and fantasy than horror, but with the overlap between the genres, there were some points of interest here for me as well. I particularly appreciated how clear it was that the authors are fans of this genre. After they finish discussing each woman, they list recommended works by that author, and then recommended related works, and the related works in particular include many contemporary speculative fiction authors, in many cases authors whose work I have read and enjoyed. Overall, a fascinating read (or listen).

Spooky bitches unite

This was a great book for horror references and you can tell a lot of research went into it. It made me aware of authors I'd never heard of before. I loved the illustrations and just the general aesthetic choices in the hardcover, like the colors and the font and the general structure of the book.
However the writing in itself didn't exactly work for me at times, I didn't like the modern cultural references like "she was a kardashian before the kardashian existed", no thank you. I also wish the author hadn't used the term "gender" where she really meant "sex" on different occasions, those two words mean very different things and are not interchangeable.
An important book worth a read nonetheless.

Packed full of information and reading recommendations, Monster, She Wrote served as a great reference for me to add about 40 more books to my To-Read list. The illustrations were also fun and the book is laid out into helpful categories that mirror the evolution of horror over time, centered on English-language works.

calling mary shelley the original goth girl: good
comparing margaret cavendish to the kardashians: BAD

also there were quite a few typos, but the cool illustrations make up for it i guess

Some great information about female authors who have been forgotten or overlooked. Have a lot more to read after this book.

The snapshot biopics are interesting, but it’s too slow of a read for me right now. May return later.

This is more of an encyclopedic reference of female horror writers.  I was familiar with some like Shirley Jackson, Mary Shelley, and Daphne du Maurier, but I had not heard of many of them and so this book is a good starting point to looking up other female authors and their works of horror fiction!
