I found some parts more enjoyable than others. Until she was on Golden Girls, I didn't really care. Oh I also liked her early life in Ardmore

Oh, I loved this book! I felt like I was having coffee with Rue McClanahan the whole time I was reading it. I could hear her telling me these stories, in her Blanche Devereaux voice. (Note: if you listen to some interviews with her, she doesn't actually sound like Blanche... Blanche was from Atlanta and Rue was from Oklahoma, so she had to fake that southern accent.) She's self-deprecating, she's honest, she tells you exactly what mistakes she made, and she even tells you when another blunder is coming up so you can brace yourself. Her advice to women everywhere: When a man proposes, it really is a viable option to say, "Let me think this over!" Good tip. ;) I really wish she was still alive. I regret that I never had coffee with Rue in real life.

There's a lot packed into this breezy vacation read. I enjoyed learning more about the woman behind Blanche on Golden Girls-- she was so driven to become a star, and worked her tail off to get there. I appreciated how much she shared about the nitty gritty of show business-- including the financial and personal costs of moving around the country, marrying multiple times, working for minimum pay or unequal pay, struggling to pay rent, and finally hitting success. The best thing I learned was that she had a clothing line on QVC that was based off the peignoirs and robes she wore as Blanche. She doesn't dish too much about behind the scenes at Golden Girls, but does share about her relationships with Bea, Rose, and Estelle. If you like GG and sassy ladies, you'll probably enjoy reading this book.
