This book took way too long to get where it was going.  The language out of this era just drones on forever and barely anything happens.

The haunting was more strange and fever dreamy than scary.

Would only recommend to Chi-town lovers and someone who just wants to read every haunted house story.

This was my first Pelayo read and MAN, did I devour this. You ever find a book that scratches JUST the right itch during a book slump? This was the one for me. This book is for the readers who cling to their fairytales with a death grip, while they listen to Florence + the Machine and fall asleep watching true crime. I’m sure that sounds chaotic, but the ones who get it, GET IT and if they haven’t read this yet, then they need to finish their current listen through of TTPD and pick up a copy. (I listened to the audiobook and it was superb 👌🏻)

Also, I won’t elaborate but this book and Looking Glass Sound complete each other. (That’s another the ones who get it get it ✨)

This book feels very out of time but completely of a place. Pelayo is a forever fan of her city, Chicago, and weaves the mystery of two sisters living on the river alongside how the city we know now came to be.

The characters are insufferable.  I get what Pelayo was trying to do, but it was annoying to read over and over and over again about how tragic and alone they were. The premise is interesting,  a ghost story coupled with The Little Mermaid and serial murders... meh.

Like a tribute story to some darker history of Chicago, the story was well written and flowed well. Albeit pretty predictable, it was quite enjoyable
