the writing annoyed me at the beginning, felt like she was trying too hard with the flowery language. if i've said it once, i've said it a million times, not everything needs to be a danged metaphor, people!!! i liked everything else about the writing, though. not sure if i just got used to it, or if she stopped trying to make everything a metaphor, but it def got better as the book went on.
i love a fun little mystery, and this was def that. already picked up the next one!

anyway the main reason it got a 3(.25)⭐ is because i use CAWPILE and atmosphere and logic got high ratings. the characters were very flat and "trope-y" and i could not tell you a single thing about their personalities except maybe Nate and Ellie. there didn't seem to be an actual plot until about 75% in and i get it's a trilogy but not a single thing was solved which implies to me that book 2 won't give anything to leave it all to be solved in book 3 and i frankly don't care about the characters enough (or at all really) to want to continue
less of a "contemporary mystery" and more "a contemporary with a bit of mystery" which is fine if that's what you want/expect, i just want my mysteries to be happening from the first few chapters or to at least care about the characters. the majority of this book i just had completely neutral feelings for (and when i did feel something, it wasn't enjoyment😅)

Truly Devious tells the story of Stevie Bell, a girl with an obsession with true crime, as she gets the opportunity to live and study in an old school, ready to solve the murder that was committed there 70 years ago. Things change, however, when she is faced with the reality of what it means to be confronting death.
The book features a variety of characters, each of them likable and fleshed out in their own way. I loved how the story managed to shift the perception of a crime from something to just solve towards something that can be traumatic and horrifying. The writing, worldbuilding, characters, and dual timeline were done perfectly to tell an intriguing story about a girl who just wanted to find a dead body.
