beautifully haunting. a delicate, understated weaving of queerness, culture, and racism through the lens of a child, both funny and sad

I loved this story right from the beginning. Each part was a small story in itself and presented so many interesting themes. My favorite though was the first part. There is just something about reading stories from a child’s perspective that I find really interesting. The last part was also interesting but really challenging. I didn’t know anything about the Sri Lanka civil war but now I know a little bit which is an added bonus. It made me laugh, smile, cry and I loved it

This was more intense and heart-rending than what I was expecting. Although it was most of the time relegated to the background, the Tamil-Sinhalese ethnic conflict occupies an important place in history. Funny Boy gives a good overview of the events that took place in Sri Lanka from the 1950s to the early 1980s. I particularly enjoyed the narration and the fact that the story was told from the point of view of a child / young teen. The naive and neutral way in which the narrator observes certain situations and events adds further impact to what has happened in his life and in Sri Lanka.
