I watched Cursed the Netflix series before I decided to read it, and since I had a general idea of the story, I chose to listen to the audiobook instead. The audiobook was narrated by Katherine Langford, who plays Nimue in the show. I really love her as Nimue, she portrays Nimue’s internal and external conflicts brilliantly, but I wasn’t a huge fan of her reading style. Langford was very monotone throughout the story, and although there is a lot of death, sadness, and loss, there are also brief moments of humor and hope, and lots of action, so I feel like her reading style let the story fall a little short. It was honestly hard for me to get through the audiobook because of this, it ended up feeling slow and so I would actually avoid listening.

As I mentioned, Nimue is rife with internal and external conflict and her story is both heart wrenching and inspiring. I love the twist of retelling the Arthurian legend from the perspective of the Lady of the Lake, with a new series of events that is heavily influenced by the hateful actions of the Catholic church. I have to say my favorite part of this book was the reveal of who’s who. I don’t want to spoil it for anyone, so that is all I will say and you’ll have to go read it yourself, because the Netflix series was canceled 😢

Other than struggling with the monotony of the reading style, I have to say I found zero plot holes, believed in every character, each of them feeling very well-developed and complex, and truly believe this book is a 5 star read because I was nearly in tears when I found out there is no estimated release for the next book yet!

I don't think book at all benefited from being a retelling. It doesn't use the characters but rather pastes names from authrian stories onto cardboard cutouts.

An interesting take on the Arthurian legend. I appreciate the feminist touches and how they incorporated the characters from the original legends. Overall though, I thought it was fairly under developed. The characters read like tropes rather than real people, and the relationships between characters were weird and never fully fleshed out-- they just became really close, really fast, for no apparent reason.

I was surprised to find out the illustrator is an award winning artist because the illustrations in this book are not good. They actually felt like they detracted from the story.

The best chapter was the last one, but then they took away some of its emotional weight in the epilogue. I think they should have let Nimue's story end with her final chapter.
