Linda Sue Park does it again. I had high expectations because of my great love for A Single Shard. I loved the simple way she told this beautifully complex and rich story. The things we do to each other and for each other are so devastating and fantastic that it's difficult to fathom. I highly recommend this to everyone!

"To young people, I would like to say: Stay calm when things are hard or not going right with you. You will get through it when you persevere instead of quitting. Quitting leads to much less happiness in life than perseverance and hope."

I picked this up because it was on our Caudill Nominee shelf, and because of it's length I figured I could get through it in an hour or so. This is a tough book to read because of the subject matter--the war in Sudan, and the overall lack of access to water in the area. It is based off a true story, which makes this even more remarkable. I appreciate the respect that Linda Sue Park payed to the person this book was based off of. Age wise, this works on a number of levels because although it is difficult to read because of the suffering, it isn't a graphic book.

Classroom teachers may want to use this to spark a community service project, as there is information in the back of the book about Salva's organization. I can see some really great conversations and hopefully actions resulting from the book.

Based on a true story of Salva Dut, a survivor of the war in Sudan. Salva is separated from his family when quite young. He walked thousands of miles between refugee camps until he was sent to New York after the camp was closed. This is his story, but there are so many “Lost Boys of Sudan”. A story of hope, encouragement and perseverance it is not to be missed.
This is also an Accelerated Reader book. Level 5.0 and point value of 3.

The way he wove 2 stories--present-day and historical together was really well done. Puts a face on what happened in South Sudan.

A brief but moving story about the Lost Boys of Sudan. Based on a true story.
