Had to read this for school. Really good read.
In 2002, my husband and I helped with a group of Lost Boys from Sudan who had been placed in our neighborhood. We became particularly close to four of them with whom we interacted daily for a few years. This book was good for me to read because I have often wondered about the trauma of their journey to Ethiopia. They were always the happiest, most hard-working, most gracious group of young men, and the fact that they endured such tragedy is astounding to me. I thought this book did a great job explaining what happened, and it's on a level that middle graders can understand. I also like how the author included the second storyline, that provides the hope and redemption of Salva's experience. A great book that everyone should read.

Short, impactful, and fast paced. Perfect for a middle grade reader to be introduced to real world events. Our 6th graders read this and Refugee by Alan Gratz, and they absolutely love it. They want to borrow it from the library so they can read ahead and know what happens! I highly recommend both books to help frame conversations about current events around the world.
Absolutely loved this ❤ I didnt think I would but this is an extremely important book and both heart warming and heart breaking. Recommend strongly
2 stories...one of a young girl that spends all day walking to get water for her family in Sudan. The other, set during the Sudanese Civil War, of a young boy who has to run when fighting near his school sends him and the other boys running for their lives. I cried a few times because of all he went through, but it has a great ending!
Read with my little circle group. Very sad but fascinating story.
