I listened to the audiobook version. I enjoyed the story and the peek into life in South Sudan.

A quick, easy read. This YA novel follows two Sudanese tweens at different time periods: the mid '80s and early 2000s. It documents the toll civil war has taken on the country, as well the hardships surrounding something we take for granted every day: accessing water.

Salva is a young boy attending school in the mid-80s, when war comes suddenly to his village. Torn apart from his family, he spends many years in refugee camps, struggling for basic necessities like food and water.

Years later, Nya must make a long, arduous walk to a pond twice a day to get water for her family. In the dry season, they must relocate altogether. Her sister becomes ill from drinking unclean water and she is unable to attend school because her job as water gatherer is too important.

Their stories come together eventually in a moving way. My daughters had to read this book last summer for school and then later participated in a fundraiser/walk-a-thon for Water for Sudan, a charity that builds wells in remote Sudanese villages. Their middle school successfully raised enough money to build a well. I'm glad to have finally picked this up off the shelf to give it a read and grateful that this was chosen as a "One Book/One School" project for my daughters.
