Basically a short story of two people but the book is broken up into many tiny chapters going back and forth between these two characters.
Anyone seeking to help children understand other cultures and their struggles should introduce this book to those they influence.
A great true story! Stories of the Lost Boys always tug at my heartstrings. This one has a happy ending!

Would have loved more but great for a short story. Learned some new history and they really packed so much into this.
I had heard about the Lost Boys of Sudan but hadn't heard any back ground story about them or why they left Sudan. Reading this book gave me that background. I liked learning about two different time periods in Sudan. By the end of the book both time periods were tied together.
I enjoyed the two intersecting stories, but felt like they were too brief in the audio edition. This could be my own fault, having read other stories that were more lengthy, but this could be a good intro piece.
Serendipity struck during my reading of this novel when my area experienced a water main break, leaving me without for an excruciating 8ish hours. (Cue the First World guilt.) Though partially fictionalized, Salva Dut's story is beyond moving. Park's narration is beautifully simplistic so that the reader cannot help but fall deep into his and Nya's lives. I hope that anyone who reads this book, including myself, manages to turn whatever feelings it stirred in their hearts into action. Guilt is not enough.

This book follows the stories of two young people in Sudan. Nya lives in Southern Sudan in 2008, and every day she makes two trips to the pond to get water and bring it home. She takes two trips a day, every day, from the time she was old enough to go on her own until she will be old enough to marry.
In 1985 Salva escaped a brutal skirmish in his village and traveled with a group to a refugee camp. He lost his family and everything he had. He spent twelve years in various refugee camps until he was sponsored by a family in the United States. Salva determines that he will help those who have been left behind in his war-torn home country.
