this is an incredibly interesting story. it does not surprise me that the story has inspired people to get involved and make a difference! a quick and easy read.
Own.
This book was very moving and thought provoking. It was a relatively short and easy read from a technical standpoint. Park did a lovely job weaving Nya and Salva's stories together. Nya's more modern story was changed by Salva's earlier experiences. The lessons of one step in front of the other and simply reaching the next plateau were well revived, time and again. It was valuable exposure to the experiences of people in our world and the challenges so many face: war, lack of access to resources, refugees, government unrest, etc. Park packs a lot of ideas into a slim book written for children.
Even though this book is probably aimed more at an upper elementary age group, I found it a worthwhile read for my Middle Grade homeschool students who have been, perhaps, a little more sheltered than others their age. It was a quick read for us and I could tell there was a lot of thinking going on. While it wasn't a *fun* read, it was an important one.

9/10. I had to read this book for English class, and it came out surprisingly good. Short read can read in a single sitting.

We've heard that clean water can change lives in developing countries. It's a difficult thing to imagine, given our access to all the water we could ever want. In A Long Walk to Water, Linda Sue Park takes us to Sudan to bring this message home in a powerful way.
2008. Nya must walk for eight hours every day, for seven months out of the year to fetch drinking water for her family. It's not always clean and sometimes it makes people sick. When a team of workers tells her small village there is water buried deep beneath the ground they've been living on, it changes Nya's life in ways she can't even begin to imagine.
1985-2006. Salva Dut is 11-years-old when he is forced to flee into the bush as the civil war in Sudan reaches his home in Loun-Ariik. His trek from his home in Sudan across the Nile, through the desert and to Ethopian and Kenyan refugee camps spans years and is full of peril, danger, and heartache. Yet, despite the hopelessness of his situation, Salva displays incredible bravery and perseverance. His mantra of facing just one day, one moment at a time allowed him to surmount incredible obstacles and achieve amazing success.
Don't let the slimness of this volume fool you; Park's sparse, matter-of-fact writing will sneak up and into your heart before you even realize it. Salva's story will stick with me for a long time.

A short but so interesting read about sudan, its history and its people.
It's maybe a bit dark, but more a children's/middle grade thing than YA. Based on a true story from a region - Sudan - that I don't really hear about much: The Lost Boys of Sudan
It was a bit too "polished" for an adult and the choice of narrators for the audiobook was disappointing - they should have gone with young actors. But I learned something new.

مگه نمیدونی؟!...

The book is an incredible story of perseverance in the face of incredible odds. Through Salva's story, we learn about the context of his struggles and those living through the violence in Sudan. The book is inspiring because of the will to survive shown by Salva and his ability to make it to that next step. The book does leave a lot of unanswered questions about Sudan and towards the end there are major gaps in the main character's narrative that leave something to be desired.
