Overall, pretty good read. Personally, I thought Shiny and Oree falling in Love was a bit forced. For the most part, she only tolerated his presence but then in the last chapter they happened to fall in love. Just felt kind of thrown in there.

One of the rare times the second book was better than the first. And that tragic ending just killed me! I want more of Oree! I want to know what happened to Itempan afterwards!

Can't wait for #3! This is well done. Book 1 showed us a fascinating world with great characters. Book 2 shows the same world about ten years later, and it's like looking at the same world through a window on a different side of the house. The key gods are still the backbone, but everyone else is new. The implications of the existence of godlings and magic are rolled out in an inexorable logical way.

The protagonist is blind but can see when magic is active. I did stall a few times when reading, because she often describes situations as a sighted person would, and I kept asking myself, "Is she supposed to be able to see that at this point?" I think the answer was always yes, but that one thing broke the flow of a book that might otherwise demand to be read in one sitting.

The plot points are not always predictable, and we see characters faced with choices where the right path is not at all obvious.

You can read this by itself, but I strongly recommend doing The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms first.

Summary: If you are starting to feel that no one in SF has had anything new to say since Perdido Street Station, read these books.
