Okayyyyy sooooo... I loved this! It was silly and fun and whimsical! The only thing keeping me from rating it a 5 star was because I didn't vibe with the romance! But when do I ever you know what I'm sayin... I just think literary men can do better sometimes BAHAHA but no this was fun! It really subverted the Cinderella story, seeming reminiscent of Little Thieves by Margaret Owen. It was an engaging read as well, and that's always a win!

And THEODOSIA! She was actually so easy to love most of the time! Yes of course she's got her faults but I really did root for her and I think that was a feat on the author's part! So yeah, a win all around!

This book did not at all take the course I thought it would.
Is this a spoiler? It takes place mostly in the fairy realm. That and the methods of the fairy I didn't expect.
She was really horribly awful at the start - not all things that can be justified with Beatrice being horrible to her, I was excited for the fairy godmother to show her some manners - did not exactly happen, at least not like I was wishing ... while reading through you know where it wants to go and why all this stuff is happening but still I was somwhat dissatisfied how the second task played out (and the length).
Also, a big part or safety mechanism of hers is snarky comments and making a discussion out of every conversation but sometimes it felt too much, how does she come up with all that all the time instantaneously?
The writing was certainly humorous, but I wished for more normal conversation.
Another point, obviously there's a big discrepancy of how Theo sees herself and her actual self not just about her self consciousness but her character ... girl, yes you are naive, she didn't second guess all the important stuff - especially with the second task, although she wouldn't have been able to do much about it even if she did - her life being on the line and all.
I was rooting for lock ngl so I felt a little victorious at the end. She reallt did play both fields succesfully. Did not like the feeling of dread that I felt all throughout this knowing her first ever friends were essentially using her and lying all the time, with her life on the line - and that's why I was also surprised how amicably it concluded, I expected a bigger fallout. Well they weren't totally dishonest with their feelings towards her but still.
There was way more blood and trauma in this book than expected, the horse story ...
Well let's just say it isn't just a silly good time cinderella story.
My favourite part remains to be the beginning, I loved seeing how horrible she was but then the fate that awaited her I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy. Especially the sequence of her at Wainwright, I felt a bit bad laughing at her dreams shattering more and more with each second.
It was also clear that Mayo has a real soft spot for long and winding confessions, some things were said where her eyerolling and scoffing was completely justified and she cannot be blamed.

To conclude, the beginning and her finding kinship in this other world was the best part, it dipped for me with the second task but the ending was hopeful so I'm okay. Not as messy as it could've been.

This must've been the book where people complained that the fmc said "off herself" instead of just killing oneself, did throw me off a little.

I had very different opinions about this book throughout as it continued - Theo is definitely a bit of a morally grey/somewhat unreliable narrator who I wasn’t sure about at first but I appreciated seeing her growth throughout the book. I didn’t necessarily expect the twist but I definitely saw there being some kind of twist coming and I’m still not entirely sure how I feel about how it played out. I definitely want to read the next book in the series (both cause I liked this book for the most part and because I’m curious about where the story’s planning to go) but still not entirely sure how I feel about this first book lol

Hooked from beginning to end! In the beginning, the Theodosia Balfour character was very insufferable, but once you start the semi-healing journey with her, you start to understand her a lot more, and honestly, I felt for you and could really relate to her. Wild! The twists and turns were *chef's kiss*. Highly recommend.
The audiobook was great. I couldn't stop listening. If I didn't have to go to bed, I would have listened to this story in one day. The narrator did a great job. She was easy to listen to and understand, and I could listen to her forever.

I could not put this down. This book was so refreshing and so much more than just a Cinderella story. I thought at the very beginning it would be boring but quickly it became anything but that. The only reason why it wasn’t five stars is some slight plot holes throughout the book. Still I’m very glad to have read it.

VERY interesting multi-angle retelling on Cinderella...and not just because the protagonist is a step sister! Everyone is complex,
