I totally loved this fanciful story loosely based on Cinderella. What happens to the wicked stepfamily left behind? Who is actually good at heart and deserving of love? Full of fun snarky characters, surprise twists, and magic galore. If you liked Caraval, you will like this!

Thank you to Orbit Books for the opportunity to read this ARC.

Netgalley gave me a free audio copy in exchange for an honest review. I like fairy tales and retellings, but the fae world can get boring for me. This book was not boring at all! Theo is an interesting heroine, not perfect, but you're on her side in general. She learns and grows, but still has her flaws by the end of the story. I like when retellings show the hidden sides of characters that were mostly just props in the original story.

An Absolutely fun, hilarious, and adventurous retelling of Cinderella’s step sisters. Once Cindy is married to the prince with her Happily Ever After, the step-sisters still have their stories to tell! The world that Theodosia lives in has quirks, fun characters, and just the right tropes.

As a fan of a character who consistently slips up with a devolving story that is a bit clumsy as she is a victim of her circumstance, I loved Theodosia. Coming from the background that we all know, and learning her story, opens a new perspective. Found Family with a scoop of romance is always fun!

The setting is charming and based on a Victorian era with a twist of modern day livelihood

This is a spin on the classic Cinderella tale about the second stepsister, named Theodosia or Theo, for short. It is filled with fairies and supernatural creatures, including a grumpy gnome, magical realism, and a bit of a rom com. The book is funny and sarcastic at times, and I found myself laughing out loud. I genuinely enjoyed the characters and didn't see the twist at the end until I got there. One thing I did not like was the utter shaming and bashing of Cinderella. A story (thank you Disney) that this little princess grew up on, for me, it was tough to read her as a bad person -- which was mostly how I picked up on her portrayal. Alas, maybe I should toughen up a bit, but in this fantasy world, i need to hold onto the good memories.

Thank you to NetGalley, Orbit Books and the author Laura J. Mayo for this ARC. It was released in October 8, 2024 so bad to your local bookstore and pick one up.

This healed my soul.

I love fairytale retellings, and this one was great. It had the whole "don't make deals with the fae", showed what it is like to grow up with a sister who makes everything about them, and shows the pain and growth the victims of nasty rumors can grow.

This book was hilarious, and I loved that it really focuses in on the character growth of the main character and her focus on breaking generational cycles.

I hit a wall with this book. The passages switch between Theo’s third-person limited perspective and third-person omniscient voice. This fluctuation makes it unclear if we’re meant to see things through Theo’s eyes or from a more objective, ironic narrator. It also jumps between past perfect and simple perfect tense. I continue running into this past perfect/simple perfect issue in books. This one annoyed me so much I stopped reading to transcribe the first chapter and edit it to something readable because the story had so much potential.
