Delightfully chaotic, as anything with fairies should be.
How to Summon a Fairy Godmother! The OTHER side of Cinderella's story.
Turns out ugly/wicked stepsisters aren't always as wicked/ugly as described.
(Well, one of them was pretty awful. The one we're talking about was just convenient for the palace's public relations narrative. The stepmother was definitely a real piece of work, though.)
Anyway, no matter how ugly or wicked the narrative needs you to be, nobody deserves to be married off to a gross elderly joyless jerk. That is where the desperate summonings of fairy godmothers come in.
Of course, fairy bargains rarely go as planned. But yes, they do come with fabulous enchanted gowns.
This book was funny! It was a ROMP. And the author lives in New Hampshire, which I did not know, but now I know, and now I can joyfully bully her into being our friend.
There were no dragons.

The ending was not what I wanted but it's set up for a second book Soni can't complain too much. But it was such a fun read and I enjoyed it so much. I laughed and cried and definitely recommend

thanks to netgalley for providing me an e-arc in exchange for a review!
i lovedddd this. the perfect blend of actual plot with serious stakes and some silly comedy situations that theo needs to find her way out of. this is a retelling, but quite loosely and i thought it was really well done. i loved kaz the most out of the cast of side characters, but each one was so fun. i am locked in for when the next book in this series comes out.

Witty, a twist on a fairy tale, but I wished a little more focus had been given on our main character actually being redeemed.
How to Summon a Fairy Godmother by Laura J Mayo is a fun listen (or read) that takes a classic tale and spins it on its head. A bit of romance and a smidge of fantasy kept this engaging, although I would have appreciated more of both. The difference between four and five stars for me was pacing-I felt that so much of the beginning was spent with a deeply unlikeable protagonist that casual readers might give up before the ultimate pay off. It took until about 30-40% to feel attachment to Theo, the main character and while I think the ending was worth it, I wish there had been a bit more nuance at the beginning to invest me in her character. To those readers I say-keep going! It really is a charming and ultimately emotionally satisfying read and you will be glad you did. The audiobook narrator is so so good and I hope to listen to more with her. Thank you to Netgalley and Hachette Audio for this listen!
