Another Jodi win in my book. Although I think the book could have been shorter, and the main character Nina was insanely annoying, the story telling and detail is unmatched. Can’t wait to read more from this author

There was just something off about this book. The religious aspects vs. the legalities. It was just a little weird and logically didn't make sense. A lawyer who prosecutes child sexual abuse cases murders the priest (in court) accused of abusing her child before any evidence is brought that can actually connect him to the crime. This is what bothered me the most. She's a lawyer. She knows this is based on here say, yet she murders him in court in front of everyone, just so her son won't have to testify or have a competency hearing, but he eventually has a competency anyways. Blah, blah, blah. I feel so much more could have been done here, like an investigation. The only good part was the ending.

I've read all of Picoult's books, but I must say, this one got me a little bit (actually a lot) mad. The plot twist in the middle of the book completely shocked me, and it was of such little importance that I promptly slammed shut the book and went to read my Stephen King novel. The plot twist completely turned the story around. The book would've been perfectly fine without the twist.

Another thing that really irked me was Nina's actions. Really, Nina? Was it really necessary? You were not protecting your son, you were protecting yourself and your career.

Controversial topics abound in this book. Child abuse, court cases, corruption in a church, this book was everything I would've enjoyed if it was written in any other way other than this one. I seriously wanted to throw the book across the room when I finished.

Why I rated 2.5 stars? I would've rated more--if it weren't for that stupid plot twist.

I have to be honest, I wasn't sure if I was going to be able to read this book due to the obvious triggers that are mentioned in the synopsis, but I gave it a try and I'm glad that I did. Picoult really was able to give a 'fly on the wall' type of view into a family going through a terrible crisis, illustrating the anguish of the characters, the need for justice, the pressures of being thrust into the media, legal 'red tape', as well as the resulting constant strain/effects of the pressures on a marriage when going through this crises extremely well. There were times that I had to put the book down and take a bit of a break from the heavy subject matter, but overall, this book kept my attention. This is the first Jodi Picoult book that I have read, and although the subject matter was heavy and legal processes became a bit tedious, I really appreciated this book, and look forward to reading another book from this author.
