Okay first of all.
We are well into the 1840s. Victoria is on the throne. We have lived through the age of enlightenment, Napoleon, and the French Revolution, and you are honest to goodness expecting me to believe that there are a whole bunch of puritan witchhunters and 1600s era superstition still going on? Jane Austen has published all of her novels for pete’s sake! And you have a fucking witch hunt in your story?
Even if this WAS remotely in the cultural zeitgeist at that moment, because maybe it would be, if witches were real. You want me to root for and feel bad for two women who, through their super special magic, contrive to slip a man a roofie, and then get mad at him for lashing out when he clocks it? Like the sexual politics of it are so fucked up!

I literally havent not finished a book in years. I was willing to forgive the sin to history but I have a zero tolerance policy for trying to turn
drugging your husband so that he will sleep with you against his will just so that your child, who you got by having a supernaturally ordained one-night stand, could be born without the adultery being discovered
Into some sort of discussion about the persecution of women in history. Like oh no! You do not get to use the historical oppression of your people as a shield for the responsibility of your heinous actions
