2 stars may be a little harsh, but to steal from another reviewer it is like a late night lifetime movie. The relationship Jack had with his "mom" was far fetched, I mean leaving his wedding night to answer a phone call from his mother? Also the whole premise of the book about Coralee being able to stay in the home...? I mean if Jack is a young man I am sure he could have picked her frail self up and "kicked her to the curb".
The whole idea about Meredith just "going off" was beyond weird, I mean if I was Loren and Meredith was as close of a friend/semi mom but refused to call her or come see her for months on end.....not buying it that red flags weren't going up....
I wanted to like it but, it just didn't work. It was too unbelievable for me!

This is the second book I've read in like the past month or so about a mother-in-law. What gives? I really enjoyed this story and its fast pace and the MIL is truly psychotic. Even when we learn WHY she is the way she is, it's all so very over the top. I mean, really? There's a lesson to be learned here though. Know your state's laws when it comes to inviting people (even family) to live in your house with you because it may not be so simple to get them out when they are no longer welcome.
The MIL in this story did amuse me with some of her tactics. Gaslighting at its finest, plus

tearing down expensive custom-made wallpaper, repainting walls, burning antique heirlooms, and getting wine stains on them is all pretty ballsy if you ask me.

This book gave me so much anxiety.
The book was a slow burn, but throughout the entire thing I was so anxious about what was going to happen between Loren and Coralee.
The ending was absolutely insane. To find out the connection between the mother in laws hatefulness and her motives was just completely insane. There is so much into this book but I don’t want to give too much away!
I enjoyed this book, despite how anxious it made me throughout the story. After reading two of Kiersten Modglin’s books, think I’ve found a new favorite author!

Another Modglin thriller in the books and it did NOT disappoint. I am on a Modglin kick...a binge-a-thon if you will!
This story was too good to be true...the quick love story, the idyllic, stately home, the perfect daughter and the elusive MIL. WOW. Modglin has an innate ability to draw you in, share enough to make you think you have it figured out and then BLOW UP YOUR BRAIN with a crazy ending - the ultimate, crazy twist of the knife.
This was probably the darkest Modglin book I've read to date and I loved it. I just am extra grateful my future MIL is such a lovely human and nothing at all like Coralee!
Have you read Modglin's work yet? If yes...what is your favorite? If not...what are you waiting for?!

Loved this book. I could figure out most of the twists but it was beautifully written and oh my God I could feel Lauren’s pain! It was quite similar to “Here to stay” by Mark Edwards at some point and I really hoped it would turned up completely different from that one, and it did. Apparently Coralee got the idea for her plan from a book though, I wander if it could have been that one...
