MEETING THE MOST TALENTED PERSON OF THE EMPIRE
rating: ★★★.5

Set during the Imperial era of the galaxy, the Empire, along with a young cadet, Eli Vanto, they discover someone part of the Chiss species, Mitth'raw'nuruodo, or simply Thrawn. His past is mysterious as the Empire grows to learn more about this newcomer with the help of Eli, who becomes his translator. Along the journey, Thrawn goes from rank to rank, with Eli right by his side. Featuring other characters from all of Star Wars, it's an interesting adventure through the days of the Empire.

As a huge fan of Star Wars: Rebels, I had to read the Thrawn novels, and many fans who read the books love this series. It was interesting to hear about Thrawn and how the Empire found him, and how he grew to be a Grand Admiral, especially when Rebels doesn't give too much information on him. I love the character of Eli Vanto, I felt bad for him whenever he wasn't getting much recognition, and very happy when he was finally promoted after watching Thrawn get promoted so many times. I recognized Arihnda Pryce from Rebels and her backstory was interesting, though I felt like she took up too much of the plot. Whenever Lothal was mentioned, I kept on getting flashbacks. I like how the stories of Thrawn and Pryce intertwine though, as Pryce had met Thrawn and it ties into how she knows him well. Honestly, I didn't know how to rate this book. I liked the characters and the plot based on how I know them from all of Star Wars, but I did feel like Thrawn could have gotten a bit more of the story rather than Pryce. Every time Anakin Skywalker was mentioned, it confuses me how Thrawn knows him, but I bet this will be answered in the second book as Thrawn has now met Darth Vader.

I recommend this book to all Star Wars fan, especially fans who have seen Star Wars: Rebels and fans excited for the Ahsoka series. I am looking forward to reading more of Thrawn's novels and seeing him in live action. Who else is excited?

I loved this story, even if there was a few times I felt bogged down with all the politics. 99% of the cast of characters are what we, as Star Wars fans, would consider the villians. The change in perspective kind of made me forget that. I found myself routing for Pryce and Thrawn against their enemies and strangely forgot that I wasn't supposed to. When you watch Rebels, these characters are so viciously evil, but here we see them interacting with their friends and families and coworkers, driven and passionate about their place in the galaxy. And Eli Vanto is probably one of my favorite characters. I adored him and his relationship with Thrawn. He really was the eyes in which we viewed most of this story and I enjoyed his perspective and his growth the most. Thrawn is Thrawn and he doesn't change much, but Eli's life was turned upside down, and for better or for worse he grew and adapted and became a formidable character in his own right. Definitely my favorite of the 6 books.

3.5 Stars. I really struggled through the first half finding it pretty boring but the second half had me very interested. I am very torn about reading the second book in the trilogy now though due to this and the mixed reviews.

This was a surprise. I love reading "movie novelizations" but otherwise, generally find "branded" fiction a sort of gratuitous add on to movies/tv shows. (Note: This does not apply to things like Marvel where it was a comic book first, but rather things where there's a very tightly defined set of on screen rules and ideas to be adhered to.) I dipped into the world of Star Wars fiction a bit hesitantly with [b:Leia: Princess of Alderaan|34860402|Leia Princess of Alderaan (Journey to Star Wars The Last Jedi, #3)|Claudia Gray|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1509816682l/34860402._SY75_.jpg|56102984] and was so delightfully surprised by how good it was that I finally decided to dip in again and try Thrawn.

First, I'll say, I am anxiously awaiting the next book in this series, which doesn't happen to me often in "tie in" stuff. But...to the book...

I don't particularly care for "humanize the bad guy" stories, especially when the bad guy is so obviously bad as the Empire is. (Spare me your "Death Eaters are secretly good," reads as well!) Still, this book managed to bring me a perspective on the Empire I found not just readable, but fascinating. At no point did I feel as thought I was supposed to like them, or that the book needed me to think they were good or redeemable.

All in all, a good (and quick!) read that I enjoyed enough to miss a train stop for!
