First off, I enjoyed this book. Great pacing and fantastic battle scenes.
It tells the story of the rise to power of the infamous Thrawn.
However, to me he seems very one dimensional, never fails and doesn't face any real challenges.

We follow Eli Vanto, an imperial cadet from a backwater planet, training to join the navy as a supply officer. He's part of the crew that find a Chiss alien, Thrawn, alone upon a planet, seemingly in exile. Thrawn is a genius tactician, formerly of the Chiss military, and quickly is adopted into the ranks of the Empire. He rises quickly, dragging Eli along with him, and we soon get to see how now Admiral Thrawn's missions all tie together to a bigger plot.
Thrawn is a brilliant character and I love him so much. He's giving autistic genius with zero social or political skills. Eli is such a real and fun character to place with Thrawn. Eli has such a small understanding of the world and Thrawn instantly sees and utilizes his strengths.
I loved this book and the plot with Nightswan at the end got me good. I love plots like this, that unfold slowly and everything happens for a reason.

Listened to the audiobook version.
I don't know that I can give this a full honest review. I am not the biggest fan of Star Wars Rebels and I feel that this book would be more enjoyable to someone who was already familiar with the characters that span this book and that series.
It does however give interesting backstory into one of the greatest Star Wars villains of all time. I also enjoyed the peek behind the curtain of the Royal Imperial Navy.
Thrawn shows himself as a true master of tactics.
