The story is split into a couple threads, the main one covering Thrawn and his companion, which was very good, having both a fair bit of action and an interesting Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson pattern going on, and a second thread covering Miss Pryce, which was much less interesting and seemed only tangentially relevant, especially at first. I'd give the Thrawn part itself a 4.5, but the Pryce sidestory only a 3.0.

well that was unexpectedly fun? I didn't think I'd be so intrigued about reading about the imperium from a perspective like that

A fun origin story for Thrawn (and surprisingly Governor Pryce) rising through the ranks of the Empire, and I was surprised at how much this actually connected to the TV show Rebels.

Pretty good. Better than the other trilogy.

I'm perfectly happy I read this book -- I wanted to learn more about Thrawn's rise in the empire and origin, and it starts that process. He continues to be a fascinating character in this book, as he was in the Heir to the Empire series. Much of the book also covers Arindha Pryce's rise, which I found waaaay less interesting. Overall, I'd call it interesting more than gripping; there wasn't a book-long plot that made me want to really continue other than I enjoyed learning more about Thrawn. So it wasn't bad, but I can't say it was great. The writing was typical of Zahn -- very readable.

Mr. Zahn has done it again. All expectations met. Thank you, sir. The writing and pacing was well planned and executed. An enjoyable read. I would recommend this book to any Star Wars fan.
