It's been forever since I've read the Thrawn trilogy, but I always liked him as a character. He was an antagonist but not a villain; he always had his own agenda and just happened to be working for the Empire in order to achieve it. When I saw this book, I was eager to read more about him. The results are a little mixed.
When the novel focused on Thrawn, I was engaged. I liked his progression from castaway to grand admiral, and all the steps it took to get there. The interaction between him and Eli felt a lot like reading space Holmes and Watson. The narrative even had portions highlighting people's body language and tone of voice. I liked the little tidbits that were from Thrawn's journal, too. I almost wish the narrative was from his point of view rather than someone else watching his progression with awe.
I didn't care for the other narrative as much. I know now that she was a character appearing in a Star Wars TV show, but while reading it, I just felt like her portions were slowing down the story. I didn't really care that much about her or her political meandering. I wanted to get back to Thrawn. Their stories did connect a few times, but overall I just constantly felt tempted to skip over her portions of the novel.
One thing that's been bugging me about these books is the non-human hate/discrimination. It's just a really weird angle to take, since most of this galaxy's inhabitants are non-human. True it's a very human thing to hate and discriminate against something different, but here it just seems stupid and weird. I wish it wasn't part of the narrative, because every time it comes up it's super annoying.
That said, still love Thrawn. I wish the book was completely about him and more focused on his perspective, but it was good to see him again all the same.
