After All by Karina Halle

This was cute, though very straightforward. Emmett, particularly, was great - such a complex history, that he's had to try and shake free of.

Not sure it needed a villain -
SpoilerI really don't understand the game the PR chick was playing, and I'm not entirely convinced it holds up in any way that makes sense, from the beginning
- but that's minor thing. The main thing was Alyssa and Emmett trying to navigate their incredibly weird circumstances.

Real or fake?

Real, always real.

I was really excited to read Emmett and Alyssa's story after I first met them in Karina Halle's Before I Ever Met You. After All is a standalone story and you do not need to have read BIEMY to enjoy or understand After All, but you do get to see quite a few characters from that story here and I would recommend it for full enjoyment. While I was excited to read this book, I have to say that I just didn't connect or feel as emotionally invested as I did with Will and Jackie's story.

When Emmett and Alyssa find their paths crossing at their mutual friends' wedding, things end in a steamy night together. But what started as a one night stand quickly becomes more after pictures emerge of the two of them together, with the media speculating that Alyssa is Emmett's new girlfriend. Needing to clean up his act after a few recent incidents, Emmett proposes a fake relationship to help turn his reputation around. But what starts out as fake soon becomes real, with both of them wondering if they have a chance at a future together.

While I liked Emmett and Alyssa, I just didn't feel invested in their story. I'm not really sure why that was, but I just never felt that way. It took me awhile to get into the book, and even when I did I liked the story but didn't love it. Emmett was sexy and persistent, and I liked that he didn't give up on Alyssa. I did think that at times he seemed a bit detached from her though, and his actions didn't always feel genuine to his character. Alyssa came off as prickly (a word used throughout this story to describe her) but it was also more than that at times. She made so many assumptions about Emmett and the man he was based on the man her father had been, and she didn't know him at all! That made it hard to relate to her or even like her at times if I am honest. I also got frustrated with her constantly trying to push Emmett away when she didn't really know him and at the same time actually wanted him. While there was a lot of chemistry between these two and they were sexy together, I just never felt emotionally connected to them.

Overall, this one wasn't my favorite from Karina Halle but it did have it's enjoyable moments. Emmett had some great dirty talk and was sexy and the chemistry between these two was there from the start. I just wish I had been able to relate more or feel invested in their relationship. This won't be the last I read from Karina Halle.

After All is a fun and sexy summer read! It is full of steamy scenes, and some truly sweet moments between Alyssa and Emmett. It was harder for me to connect with these characters than normal, but I chalk that up to the absolute exhaustion that I’m operating under because there isn’t a particular thing that stuck out as something that I didn’t enjoy. I loved Alyssa’s prickliness, because that is something that I can definitely be known for and I have to say the way Emmett pushes her was precisely what she needed. That also works both ways as Alyssa definitely made Emmett feel like he could open up and be himself.

What I really appreciated about this story was the “real” feeling that it captured for me. It took me awhile to get into the story but once I did I loved every minute of it. I just loved the dialogue, and there were quite a few laugh out loud moments for me. There is a scene with a raccoon that had me giggling for 10 minutes, and I’ve been chuckling through out the day. It’s a great book, and once again Karina Halle delivers a solid, fun romance. 3.5 out of 5 stars.

I think this book started out stronger than it ended. My initial predictions for this book was ~4.25 but obviously it didn't end up this way. But I don't think this book is a downwards spiral either.

Overall this book was decent and it had lots of potential however there wasn't enough that stuck out to me to make this book memorable even a few days since I finished it. There were a lot of clichés in this and semi-cringe moments but it is a nice light easy book to read.

"Real or fake?" I whisper to him. "Real, always real" he says

I absolutely love a fake relationship story but a fake relationship by Karina Halle is a whole other level. This wasn't just the story of two people pretending to be in love and then falling in love. It was the story of two people finding each other and each of them becoming better and growing because of each other. I can't even tell you how much I loved Alyssa. How I understood her doubts, fears and desire to just have more out of life. This is the perfect summer read.

I adore Karina's stories simply for the fact that when I start one I know I am going on a journey that I will love and not want to put down until the end...maybe not even then.

This book, Alyssa & Emmett did that to me!
I wanted to keep going, I didn't want to leave them but I had to (insert sad face) but alas I know I can always go back and revisit them..and soon I will!

Karina's contemporary romance is what draws me to her. I simply love her writing and the way I can get sucked in with just a few words in the beginning.
