I bought this book during a sale. I was eyeing it for quite some time already. The cover is insanely pretty and I love Norse mythology and would love to read more about it. So, when I had an open order anyway and the shipping costs weren't an issue anymore I added this book to my order. And since I needed a quick short read for today, this book seemed a perfect fit.
I have to admit that I had some issues getting into the story. That's mostly because there is little to no explanation. That feels very natural for the characters, this is after all their world and why would they explain the world they live in daily, but if I had known nothing about Norse mythology I'm not entirely sure if I would have understood everything.
Another complicating factor is the point of view of the book. The book isn't written from a certain point of view. We switch point of view constantly. In the middle of chapters, sometimes even in the middle of paragraphs. I know that especially old stories are told that way, by my brain has been wired entirely different the last couple of years so it was hard to keep up.
However, I did love the atmosphere, the look into the life of these Northerners and their faith and Gods and magic. Because there was magic in this book, not only seer magic, but other magic too. And I loved how the author managed to show so much of this rich culture and mythology in such a short and quick read.
Although I had some issues really connecting, I would be interested in reading more stories.
