Criado em Espanha e metade espanhol de nascimento, C.W. Gortner vive actualmente em São Francisco, é defensor dos direitos dos animais, preocupa-se com os problemas ambientais e escreve romances históricos. Com mestrado em Escrita na especialidade de Estudos Renascentistas, é conhecido pela extensa pesquisa que faz para os seus livros, tendo mesmo experimentado a vida no castelo espanhol e dançado num salão Tudor.
C. W. Gortner já publicou seis romances históricos, traduzidos para catorze línguas, sendo dois deles parte de uma trilogia sobre os Tudor e está neste momento a escrever o sétimo sobre Lucrezia Bórgia. O Juramento da Rainha foi publicado em 2012 e está traduzido para seis línguas.
Isabel de Castela, a Rainha Católica é uma figura que nunca apreciei muito mas, depois de ler este livro, não só dei por mim a apaixonar-me pela história desta rainha como a compreendê-la e talvez, a admirá-la um pouco. Gortner tem uma escrita cuidada que, inesperadamente, se revela apaixonada e forte, carregada de emoções e predestinações que nos prende de imediato à história e nos leva a devorá-la como se não houvesse amanhã. Como ninguém, o autor consegue apresentar as ambiguidades, não só da figura histórica, como da política, da sociedade e da economia da época, apresentando um quadro fiel e realista que permite ao leitor tomar as suas próprias conclusões. A ficção e a história imiscuem-se na perfeição para nos dar um relato apaixonante e poderoso da vida recheada de uma mulher que seguiu os seus ideais até ao fim da vida, fazendo-nos adorar a história e a mulher.
Cheia de intriga, traição e paixão, esta é uma história que nos apresenta uma Castela dividida e decrépita, vítima da ambição e perversão daqueles que a governam que, graças aos sonhos e a fé de uma infanta, se viria a tornar uma das nações mais poderosas da Europa. Ao longo de toda a leitura quase podemos sentir a mão do destino a encaminhar Isabel para um futuro maior enquanto esta, nas suas alegrias e tristezas, no seu medo e força, sonhava com a mudança, com a paz e o amor. Caracterizada de uma forma única e excepcional, Isabel de Castela cresce, erra, apaixona-se e mostra que todos nós somos feitos de diversas facetas, que todos temos sonhos e obrigações, que o certo muitas vezes é o errado, que às vezes é preciso esquecermos e outras recordar sempre. De uma grande figura histórica, Gortner cria uma grande personagem dando-lhe vida, humanizando-a, nunca desculpando-a ou condenando-a, simplesmente apresentando a rainha, a mulher, a mãe, a filha, a irmã, a verdadeira Isabel.
Sendo uma narrativa na primeira pessoa quase sem diálogos onde o tempo passa de repente seria de esperar que esta fosse uma leitura densa mas, pelo contrário, acaba por ser uma leitura viciante que mesmo carregada de pormenores históricos, nomes, linhagens, cidades e outras tantas referências, consegue ser concisa e coerente. A vasta pesquisa feita pelo autor contribui bastante para a excelente caracterização histórica onde só encontrei um errozinho que ele não seria o único a cometer. Ao longo da história nenhum momento importante foi esquecido e é de admirar como o autor consegue humanizar estas figuras históricas, apresentando os seus defeitos, medos e fraquezas com a mesma graça com que apresenta as suas qualidades e sonhos. Enquanto romance, pois é isso que este livro é e não um livro de História, O Juramento da Rainha é um excelente trabalho de ficção que pode levar os leitores mais preocupados a procurar saber mais sobre estas personagens.
Não só Isabel nos apaixona. Todo este livro é feito de personagens marcantes, de figuras poderosas mais ou menos importantes que tornam possível esta história. Desde a amiga de sempre de Isabel, Beatriz, aos irmãos e a mãe da Rainha, os seus seguidores, os seus inimigos, todos eles são caracterizados de forma excepcional. Partilhando o protagonismo com Isabel, Fernando, seu marido e grande amor, é uma das personagens mais marcantes desta história tendo me surpreendido bastante ao longo da leitura. Já os infantes, cuja presença constante é para mim um dos pormenores mais queridos deste livro, representam bem quem serão um dia e foi com graça que vi todos eles crescerem e revelarem as suas personalidades.
Gortner estreia-se em Portugal de forma admirável com uma história apaixonante e poderosa que nos prende o fôlego, nos arrepia, nos marca profundamente. O Juramento da Rainha é, sem dúvida, um dos melhores romances históricos deste ano e C.W. Gortner um dos melhores autores do género. Espero ansiosamente por mais livros seus.

Isabella of Castile is not a queen I knew a lot about, other than her connection to Columbus. This was an interesting take on her, but I kept wondering toward the end if there wasn't a bit of white-washing about her expulsion of the Jews and Muslims from Spain. For trying to show her as a devout and strong-willed woman, it seems she is shown caving in to others, rather than taking responsibility.
I was neither thrilled nor angry with this book. It was just sort of mediocre. The story itself was good - the life of Isabel of Castile his been discussed widely amongst historians; was she a saint or was she a devil? - the story was not the issue I had with this book. My issue was with the characters, who weren't strong enough to carry the story. They were flat and lifeless, the only one with a bit of zest was Beatriz, who, unfortunately wasn't a very big character.
Fun and interesting. It was a great companion as I watched RTVE's Isabela- a Spanish series about her. Excellent!
It was good at bits but then it just got sooo slow... The voice of Isabella just wasn't strong as a narrator. Pretty disappointing.

A woman of many contradictions, Isabella of Castile is one of the most formidable and powerful queens in history. Under her rule Spain became a united country and learning and exploration flourished. Her pious reign also brought about the Spanish Inquisition, which saw the Jews of Spain exiled or killed. So was she a saint or a villain? The Queen’s Vow lets Isabella tell her own story and what we find is a woman of faith, love and an endless devotion who wanted to ensure that her beloved Castile thrived in the ever expanding world around them.
This book is what all historical fiction should aspire to. Vivid in period details and full of action, adventure and romance it can be hard to remember that you are not actually experiencing the goings on but simply reading it. The depiction of Isabella as such an incredibly complicated woman is easy to understand when you realize what she had to go through just to secure what was rightfully hers and to do what she thought was necessary for her God, her husband and her people.
Isabella is not only a queen but a dutiful wife, a caring mother, a warrior, a defender of her faith and an advocate for her subjects. It would take an incredibly strong, brave woman to be able to do all that she did in the time period she lived in and she is shown as doing so with grace, courage, fairness and tenacity unlike anyone else surrounding her. It is hard not to love her even when her ultimate choices lead to devastating consequences for others as she is depicted as a woman who does not take her choices lightly and truly searches her soul for the right answer for all.
If you enjoy historical fiction you would be remiss not to read this book. Even if you usually do not read this genre there really is something for just about anyone to enjoy. I, for one, will be running out to read more about Isabella, Fernando and their family as well as more by Mr. Gortner, who might just be my new favorite author.

I could not put this book down! As he did with Juana of Castile in The Last Queen, Gortner has once again taken a historical queen and made her as interesting and exciting as any modern day heroine. It's interesting to me how little I knew of Isabella of Spain; one who was so instrumental in allowing Columbus to open the way for the future settlement of what would become America. Of course, that is what we were taught when I was in elementary school so many years ago. The implications of what came after Columbus's discovery is entirely another story. And yes, this is a fictional depiction of a historical figure, but there is no denying the historical accuracy here. Gortner does his research well.
Isabella rose to power in a tumultuous time in Spain. To say that she was a steadfast and determined woman is saying little. The conventions of the time did not allow a princess to choose their own husband and yet she did. Spurred by her own will and her strong Catholic faith, Isabella was a force to be reckoned with. Her marriage to a prince of Aragon was a love match, yes, but also a strategic move for the uniting of Spain. Together they brought about the change of many conventions in Spain.
However, her reign was not without its blemishes. The Inquisition and the expulsion of the Jews are two events that have brought much negativity to history's portrayal of Isabella. However, Gortner has succeeded in depicting a possible reason for her decisions by giving us a multifaceted woman who believed in compassion and yet was driven by a faith that had no tolerance for other religions. To truly judge a person's actions, we would need to know more about the real person and yet we must rely on the history books. Gortner has done a good job of giving us a very human woman who truly felt her actions were for the good of her kingdom.
I have now been inspired to read more about the history of Spain and its ruling class. Once again, historical fiction has done its very important job; that of leading us to further learning about history. Something only a well written book can do. This is that book.

I didn't know much about Spain before reading this book. I was fascinated, couldn't wait to see what came next. I didn't realize all the strife and fighting Isabella & Fernando went through together. A true love story.
